Farm Show 2012

After a long day at a wrestling tournament in Lancaster County, Tina and Lars stopped at the farmshow on the way home.  The main purpose was to visit the food court for dinner 🙂  Our annual favorites continue to be the cheese cubes, milk shakes, blooming onion and honey waffles with honey ice cream.  (Funny that we had a blooming onion, as Tina had volunteered at the PA Vegetable Growers booth and spent 5 hours peeling over 350 lbs of onions – the other volunteers peeled just that many in that time frame – we had garbage cans full of huge onions, and the smell of those seemed to linger for hours).  We also took home some of the tasty  maple candy.

We did have enough time to catch the end of the high school rodeo and saw the bullriding.  We visited the butter sculpture, some of the fruit and vegetable exhibits, and looked at the quilts and other handmade items.  This year’s 1st prize gingerbread house was pretty awesome.  We also watched a little bit of the lawn tractor-pull, and did a quick tour of the animal exhibits.  We were among the last people to leave the farmshow that evening.

Holiday Decorating Continues

One of the little troubles with moving to a different house is making your holiday decorations fit the new rooms.  This is our second year at the new house and decorating was a lot easier.  Our living room continues in the complete “country” style, but in the dining room we tried for something a little more traditional, as the “country” style just does not fit the room.  Each of the 5 large windows (with deep window sills) is decorated a little different, but each one has 3 gold balls hanging by gold ribbons and a single (electric) candle to set the tone.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…

We actually bought our Christmas tree already – from a local tree farmer – and it smells wonderful throughout the house.  It’s a Douglas Fir and not yet decorated.  We always have to rearrange the living room to make space for the tree, which also involves a good cleaning job – so we did not have time to decorate it yet.  But we did get some of the outside decorations and lights up.

Thanksgiving 2011

A weekend spent with family….

  • Had a huge Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings – everything, except the turkey, came from our garden
  • Jens and Duff brewed a batch of beer
  • Anja, Sam and Tina went all night “Black Friday” shopping
  • favorite games that weekend included (like always):  Upwords, Monopoly and Risk

Snowtober Weekend: Sunday

Before…
After…

We woke up to snow covered sidewalks, lawns and roofs – though the sun was shining and it ended up to be a nice day.  I really wanted to get all the bushes I bought earlier this week on “super clearance” planted, but I had to wait until the snow melted enough to see the markers we had left on top of all our tulip and daffodil  bulbs.  After hauling 6 more loads of branches, tree-limbs and weeds, I had enough space to plant the rhododendrons, azaleas, viburnums and spireas – if they take, this will be a beautiful backdrop for the pond!  Had enough time to mulch all of the new plants as well.  Hoping that the weather report is correct and next weekend will be warmer and sunny – as we are still planning on planting another 1000 bulbs (yes…1000, for a total of 2000!)
(oh yes – also moved several loads of gravel with a wheelbarrow into the barn, to get it ready for the cement delivery soon)
